We held our first Anchorage camp and formed as a federal non-profit organization in 2014. We had 20 campers and 5 bands. Our second summer we had 30 campers and 8 bands. In 2016 we added the Advanced Rock Academy, which culminated in a recording session at Surreal Studios and we had a total of 52 campers and 11 bands perform at the Anchorage Showcase!
Why girls? Statistics show that women hold only 3% of clout positions in the mainstream media (telecommunications, entertainment, publishing and advertising) (“Research & Stats”, 2009). So for a few events year we bring together young women with adult women mentors for a unique experience of music collaboration and exploration of pertinent topics about this issue. We support the anti-bullying movement and gender equality for everyone on the gender spectrum. Most of our programs are only open to self-identified girls, but we also offer shorter camp programs that are open to boys and girls as well as adults!
We held our first rock camp in Haines in the summer of 2016 and it was a fantastic success! The Showcase had 20 campers formed into 4 bands and they played at the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds on the Main Stage for a huge, roaring crowd! In Summer 2017 we held three programs in both Anchorage and Haines and had a total of 16 bands comprised of 72 campers!
The 2018 dates are set and we have made a few changes this year! We will be having a series of one-day "mini-camps" throughout the summer rather than doing a full-week camp. You can register for just one, or for many days throughout the summer! Also, we are now open to ages 6-18. There are also certain program days this summer that are open to all kids, and not just girls, so check the registration page for all the details!
Girls Rock Camp Alaska values diversity of age, race, economic status, gender expression, size, physical ability, developmental ability, musical interests, learning styles, nationality, religion, thought, citizenship status, and sexual orientation. We promote respect and do not tolerate racism, sexism, homophobia, or other discriminatory behavior or expression.
We are an independent charity and business entity, organized by a Board of Directors and led by an Executive Director. We are also proudly associated with the International Girls Rock Camp Alliance and the National Girls Rock Camp Foundation.. We share resources and ideas with other camps, but we make leadership choices for our camps based on what is needed in our Alaskan communities. We attended the 2014 International Conference and we owe a debt of gratitude to both the Alliance and especially to Rain City Rock Camp in Seattle and the Yukon Girls Rock Camp for all the help they've given us so far! You Rock!
