Why Only Girls?
There are 2 differences between the Advanced Rock Academy and the Girls Rock Anchorage Camp: age and experience. The typical Girls Rock Camp is for self identified girls ages 8-18, whereas the Advanced Camp is for self identified girls ages 13-18. Please read the box below for an explanation of what kind of music experience we are looking for.
Advanced Rock Academy in Anchorage
Haines Sleepaway or Day Camp
We held our first Anchorage camp and formed as a federal non-profit organization in 2014. We had 20 campers and 5 bands. Our second summer we had 30 campers and 8 bands. In 2016 we added the Advanced Rock Academy, which culminated in a recording session at Surreal Studios and we had 52 campers and 11 bands perform at the Showcase!
Girls Rock Anchorage Camp
Girls should be seen AND heard!! Girls Rock Camp Alaska creates an environment for girls of all backgrounds and abilities by using music as a medium to encourage creativity, collaboration, and individuality. We are a registered business and charity with the state of Alaska and our status as a 501(c)(3) federal non-profit corporation was approved in 2014. We have already had 3 successful summer camp seasons and are looking forward to our 2017 camp season and other various events throughout Alaska.
Why only girls? Statistics show that women hold only 3% of clout positions in the mainstream media (telecommunications, entertainment, publishing and advertising) (“Research & Stats”, 2009). So for a few events year we bring together young women with adult women mentors for a unique experience of music collaboration and exploration of pertinent topics about this issue. We support the anti-bullying movement and gender equality for everyone on the gender spectrum. Our Summer Camp registration process is open to all self-identified girls, but we also offer shorter family programs throughout the school year that is open to boys and girls as well as parents!
We held our first rock camp in Haines in the summer of 2016 and it was a fantastic success! The Showcase had 20 campers formed into 4 bands and they played at the Southeast Alaska State Fairgrounds on the Main Stage for a huge, roaring crowd! The 2017 dates are set and we are making this a supervised sleep-away camp for campers from nearby towns.
We are an independent charity and business entity, organized by a Board of Directors and led by an Executive Director. We are also proudly associated with the International Girls Rock Camp Alliance and the National Girls Rock Camp Foundation.. We share resources and ideas with other camps, but we make leadership choices for our camps based on what is needed in our Alaskan communities. We attended the 2014 International Conference and we owe a debt of gratitude to both the Alliance and especially to Rain City Rock Camp in Seattle and the Yukon Girls Rock Camp for all the help they've given us so far! You Rock!
